Trước đây, vốn đã có nhiều đạo diễn làm phim về câu chuyện truyền kỳ này của văn hóa, lịch sử Hàn Quốc. Song, đến tay đạo diễn Kim Dae-woo lần này, "Bang-ja Chronicles/ The Servant được thổi một luồng gió mới khi đạo diễn Kim thay đổi cốt truyện, tao nên những tình huống éo le trong câu chuyện tình tay ba giữa Bang-ja (Kim Joo-hyuk), con gái của người kĩ nữ Chun-hyang (Jo Yeo-jung) và con trai của nhà quý tộc Mong-ryong (Ryu Seung-beom).
