Purple Noon kể về người đàn ông Tom Ripley (do Alain Delon thủ vai). Anh được cử sang Italia để có thể thuyết phục được người bạn giàu có là Philippe Greenleaf (do Maurice Ronet thủ vai) trở về Mỹ để tiếp quản công việc kinh doanh của gia đình. Tuy nhiên Philippe lại không muốn phải trở về nhà và tiếp quản công việc mà chỉ muốn được hưởng thụ cuộc sống xa hoa như hiện tại với người bạn gái của mình là Marge Sherwood (do Marie Laforêt thủ vai). Trong khi đó thì Tom lại không muốn chấp nhận cuộc sống khốn khó đang đeo bám mình. Trong một chuyến ra khơi chỉ có hai người là Tom và Philippe lênh đênh giữa đại dương rộng lớn, mọi thứ trở nên tĩnh lặng tới rợn người, khi mà đồng hồ điểm tới 12h trưa, một tội ác động trời đã được thực hiện.
