Bộ phim kể về Kurt Barnert (Tom Schilling) từ thời thơ ấu trong giai đoạn Đức Quốc xã và Đông Berlin thời hậu chiến đến khi chạy sang Tây Đức và trở thành một họa sĩ. Kurt yêu và kết hôn với cô gái xinh đẹp Ellie Seeband (Paula Beer) mà không hề biết rằng cha vợ mình, giáo sư Carl Seeband (Sebastian Koch) là một tội phạm chiến tranh. Một trong nhiều tội ác của ông ta, đó là người đã ra lệnh hãm hại dì của Kurt, Elisabeth May (Saskia Rosendahl)... Cả 2 con người đều đã trốn khỏi đất nước để rũ bỏ quá khứ, người thì trốn tránh tội ác chống lại loài người, người thì tìm con đường để khẳng định mình thông qua nghệ thuật hội họa.
