Set in 1930s Shanghai, the story opens with legendary gambler Gon and his vow to recover his father's casino from Shanghai tycoon Fung In his quest, he becomes acquainted with Sou and uncovers her fiance's nefarious conspiracy. Sou gives her heart to Gon, but he can't forget his old love Gu. Meanwhile, up-and-coming gangster Hui Man Keung is quickly making his name in Shanghai. Crossing paths during chaotic times, Hui, Gon, and Ding Lik become brothers and business partners, but Fung recruits Hui and Ding to his side through backhanded methods. Though deeply in love with Fung's daughter Ching Ching, Hui can only turn away from love and friendship when Fung's true nature is revealed. Fung, however, is not about to just let Hui walk away.

Once Upon a Time in Shanghai

“Memories Beyond Horizon” is a Chinese reality TV show , created to spotlight emerging domestic talent in film and TV.  Produced in collaboration with Zhejiang Television, Alibaba’s Youku video service, and Hong Kong’s TVB, the show features veteran film and television figures mentoring a group of 18 artists from both the mainland and Hong Kong. Each episode focuses on reinterpreting iconic scenes from classic Hong Kong films such as “Infernal Affairs” and “New Dragon Gate Inn” for their acting challenges.

Among the mentors are renowned Hong Kong directors and actors, including Yee Tung-sing and Francis Ng Chun-yu, while participants include graduates from professional acting schools, industry veterans, and individuals known for modeling, singing, or high-profile relationships.

The film's story unfolds in the fictional country of Laika and in Hong Kong, China. A police academy student who has not yet graduated, Ashan (played by Gu Bin), is tasked with a dangerous mission. He helps the criminal organization by eliminating obstacles for their leader, Atian (played by An Zhi Jie), in prison. Ashan approaches Atian, gains his trust, and collects evidence against the criminal group. After both of them are released from prison, Ashan assists Atian in rising within the criminal organization in Hong Kong. After enduring numerous challenges, Atian successfully replaces the group's leader, Bao Ge (played by Zeng Zhiwei), becoming the new boss and taking control of the organization. However, just as Ashan is about to complete his mission, his true identity is exposed.
